It is an aspiration of the Cheshire West & Chester Economic Growth team to develop the visitor offer of the waterways in West Cheshire.

A wider programme would include individual projects (some to be identified) that improve access to waterways across the borough and link a number of waterside attractions through a so-called “waterways ring”. Notable attractions are: Lion Salt Works, Anderton Boat Lift, Ice Cream Farm (Tattenhall), Chester City, Chester Zoo and the National Boat Museum (not exhaustive).

A comprehensive marketing programme, developed alongside the Canal & River Trust, would add new boaters to the 1,500 or so existing boaters on the ring. In the short term, the project aims to address issues and offer solutions around access to the Manchester Ship Canal and the related transfer of operation(s) of the small Ellesmere Port lock gates to the Canal & River Trust.
